Getting to Know Ourselves Through PE: Learning Through Games

What can a game teach us about ourselves? 🏈🏀🎾🥏

During our Self-Awareness month 🌻, students have been discovering that PE is not only about running faster, jumping higher or scoring points. It is also a great opportunity to learn more about who we are, how we work with others, and how we respond to different challenges. 🧩 🧩

Through a variety of fun and active games, students have been encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, try new strategies and pay attention to their own feelings and reactions.

From tag games and coordination challenges to obstacle courses and team competitions, every activity gave students a chance to discover something new about themselves.

Some students discovered that they naturally enjoy taking the lead. Others realised that they are excellent at encouraging their teammates, communicating ideas or finding creative solutions. Some found that competition motivates them, while others discovered that they perform best when they feel supported by their team.

And, of course, not every game went exactly as planned!

Making mistakes, losing a point, changing strategy and trying again were all part of the learning. Students had opportunities to reflect on questions such as:

How do I react when things don’t go my way?
What are my strengths?
What challenges me?
How do I communicate with others?
Am I comfortable taking the lead?
How can I support my teammates?

These experiences connect naturally with the IB Learner Profile. Students practised being communicators, caring, open-minded and reflective 🌟, while developing their ability to understand themselves and others.

Most importantly, students learned that self-awareness is not about being the best player. It is about recognising our strengths, understanding our challenges, learning from our experiences and being willing to grow.

So, while our students may think they are simply playing a game, they are actually learning something much bigger:

Every game is an opportunity to discover a little more about ourselves. 😊
