When Character and Performance Grow Together
At first glance, academic success, athletic achievement, and character development can seem like separate goals.
In many educational systems, they are treated that way.
Students are expected to perform in the classroom. Athletes are expected to perform in competition. Character development is often viewed as an additional benefit—something that may happen along the way if there is time and attention left over.
At the English International School of Bratislava (EISB), we have long believed the opposite.
The qualities that enable young people to thrive academically, athletically, and personally are deeply connected. Resilience, responsibility, self-reflection, perseverance, empathy, and leadership are not separate from achievement. They are often the foundation of it.
This belief has shaped our approach to teaching, coaching, and student development for many years.
It is also the central idea behind Coaching for Character: The Key to Unleashing Elite Performance,..
The book explores a simple but powerful premise: elite performance does not require sacrificing character development. In fact, the highest levels of sustained performance often depend upon it.
Drawing on principles from education, performance psychology, and athlete development, Coaching for Character argues that every learning environment teaches more than its intended curriculum. Whether in a classroom, on a sports field, or within a team, young people are constantly learning habits, values, attitudes, and ways of responding to challenge.
The question is not whether character is being taught.
The question is what character is being taught.
For EISB, this question has always been central.
Our students are encouraged to pursue excellence while also developing the qualities necessary to use that excellence responsibly. Academic achievement matters. Sporting success matters. But so do integrity, resilience, collaboration, and the ability to continue growing long after a particular exam, season, or competition has ended.
This holistic approach is reflected in the achievements of our students across a wide range of disciplines. Whether pursuing academic distinction, competing at national and international levels in sport, contributing to their communities, or preparing for future careers, our students are supported as whole people rather than simply performers.
The publication of Coaching for Character represents an opportunity to continue an important conversation—one that extends far beyond sport.
How do we create environments where young people can thrive?
How do we develop performance without compromising wellbeing?
How do we prepare students not only for their next challenge, but for the many challenges they will face throughout life?
These questions sit at the heart of education and coaching alike.
As a school community, we are proud to contribute to that conversation and to continue exploring ways to help young people become not only successful learners and performers, but capable, resilient, and compassionate human beings.
