Exploring the Impact of Social Media in Today’s World: MYP5 Project

Within the framework of the International Baccalaureate program, MYP5 students embarked on an exciting project focused on analyzing the use of social media in contemporary society. This project was conducted leveraging the recent Digital Citizenship course attended by the students, through which they learned about responsible use of social media, copyright and intellectual property rights, hacking, among other relevant topics.

One of the most significant parts of the project was when students selected one of the most popular social media platforms of the moment and, after in-depth research, created a short-format video to explain to the rest of the school community the benefits, drawbacks, curiosities, and other relevant information about that particular social network. This video served as an effective means to communicate their findings and raise awareness about responsible social media use.

Additionally, students designed a survey that they distributed to the school community to gather information about social media usage. Based on the collected data, students created various posters with tips for responsible and safe use of social media. These posters were exhibited during the Exhibition Day 2023/24, allowing the school community to appreciate the work done and obtain useful information about appropriate social media usage.

Throughout the process, students applied a variety of language skills, including speaking, reading, listening, and writing. This interdisciplinary experience not only allowed them to deepen their understanding of social media and its impact on society but also provided an opportunity to develop important life skills such as research, teamwork, and effective communication.

In summary, the MYP5 project on social media usage was an enriching and significant experience for students, allowing them to explore a relevant and current topic while developing essential skills for their future. We hope that the knowledge gained during this project will help them become responsible and critical users in the ever-changing digital world.
