April’s Open House: Navigating the Landscape of the USA with MYP3 William and Terentii
The energy during our April 1st Open House was palpable, but one particular presentation in the Individuals and Societies section truly captured the spirit of inquiry we foster here at EISB. William Frere and Terentii Shpenov (MYP3) took on an ambitious challenge: deconstructing the Culture, Economics, and Politics of the USA. William and Terentii didn’t just present a list of facts; they demonstrated a sophisticated grasp of how these three pillars are inextricably linked.
During their presentation, the duo explored how the United States’ economic engine drives its political influence on the world stage, and how the diverse cultural “melting pot” creates a unique internal political dialogue. Watching these MYP3 students navigate topics like geopolitical influence and market dynamics was a testament to their development as inquiring leaders. They moved beyond stereotypes to look at the actual mechanisms, the causes and consequences that make the USA such a significant study in modern history.
Perhaps the most impressive part of their session wasn’t the data points or the slides themselves, but how they chose to end: with a sincere reflection on their learning journey.
William and Terentii shared with the audience not just what they found, but how the process of research changed their own perspectives. They spoke about the challenges of synthesising such a massive amount of information and the importance of looking at a nation through a multicultural mindset.
At EISB, we often say that the “product” (the presentation) is only half the goal; the other half is the metacognition, the ability of the student to understand how they learned and how they’ve grown. By candidly sharing their hurdles and “aha!” moments, William and Terentii showed true intellectual maturity.
Congratulations to both for a stellar performance at the Open House. You’ve set a fantastic example for your peers on how to tackle “big” topics with both rigor and humility!
