Genetics is one of the most popular biology topics among students

The biology course for grades 10-11 includes a section on genetics, which students seem to enjoy very much. Although the terminology is complex, numerous practical problems help students remember it well and use it correctly. In this section, students become familiar with the structure of chromosomes and the karyotype, and learn to determine a person’s sex and health using a karyogram. They learn to solve problems related to monohybrid, dihybrid, sex-linked inheritance, incomplete dominance, and codominance, including blood types, as well as to compile and interpret pedigrees.

Perhaps this is why half of the students in this course chose genetics topics as projects and presented them at the Open Day in April of this year. For example, Katharina and Karin invited the audience to create their own phenotypic and genotypic passports based on their personal phenotype. Lucia, Aneta, and Lisa demonstrated how to determine blood types based on the presence of antigens and agglutinins and challenged the audience to solve practical problems on this topic using their own data.

The biology course in the DP program explores genetics in depth, as this field of science is very promising. Therefore, our eleventh-graders have an excellent opportunity to continue exploring their passions.
