From Description to Experience: A Practical Slovak Language Lesson with Year 7

Today’s Slovak language lesson with the Year 7 class was designed to meaningfully connect theory with practice, which proved to be highly engaging and motivating for all students. In previous lessons, we focused on the descriptive writing style, specifically, describing a process. Students learned about its structure, appropriate language features, and the importance of clarity and logical sequencing.

As a practical application of this knowledge, we prepared a simple breakfast together. The students were not only actively involved in making the food, but they were also encouraged to reflect on each step of the process they had previously described in writing. Emphasis was placed on chronological order, the use of appropriate verbs, and clear expression.

During the activity, students worked in small groups, which supported the development of both their language skills and social competencies such as communication, cooperation, and responsibility. The hands-on experience helped them better understand the importance of precise description, they realised that in order to achieve a successful outcome, instructions must be clear, logical, and easy to follow.

The lesson concluded with a shared breakfast, where we all enjoyed the food we had prepared together. This moment served not only as a pleasant ending to the activity but also as an opportunity for reflection. Students discussed what went well, what they would improve next time, and how the earlier writing task supported their work.

This integration of theory and practice proved to be highly effective. Students were able to internalise the learning content in a natural and experiential way, which significantly contributes to deeper understanding and long-term retention.
