Workshop on Media Bias: Learning to Read Between the Lines

Today Year 9 welcomed volunteer Pedro from INEX Slovakia, he led an insightful workshop on Media Bias for our students.

The workshop aimed to raise awareness about how even trusted, traditional media outlets can unintentionally (or intentionally) present news in a biased way, shaping how we perceive reality. Through interactive discussions and activities, participants learned how to recognize different forms of bias in journalism and why critical thinking is essential when consuming any kind of news.

The session combined theory and practice. In one activity, participants compared headlines from different media sources, discovering how subtle wording changes can influence a reader’s opinion. In another, they explored how photographs and framing styles can evoke completely different emotions about the same event.

By the end of the workshop, participants walked away more aware, more skeptical in a healthy way, and better equipped to question what they read and see. Because understanding bias isn’t about distrust it’s about being informed.
