IB Learner Profile: Risk-Takers in Year 3

As a primary school teacher who teaches both Slovak Language and Literature and Slovak Language Acquisition, I view the development of IB learner profile attributes as an integral part of everyday learning. One of these key attributes is being a risk-taker—a student who demonstrates the courage to step out of their comfort zone, try new things, and present their ideas in front of others.

During the Primary Entertainment Afternoon, students Arthur, Xara, Milena, and Sasha demonstrated this attribute through public speaking. Each of them actively participated in presenting a poem in front of an audience, thereby developing not only their communication skills but also their confidence and ability to manage the natural stress associated with performing.

Arthur and Xara presented the poem “Žirafa” focusing on clear pronunciation, intonation, and expressive delivery. Their performance reflected an emerging ability to engage with a text and interpret it meaningfully for an audience.

Milena and Sasha presented a poem in Slovak, which is an additional language for them. Their performance highlights the importance of creating a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged to use a new language actively and authentically. Such opportunities play a significant role in supporting language acquisition and building communicative competence.

All of these students showed a willingness to participate, present in front of others, and embrace a challenge—key indicators of the development of the risk-taker attribute within the IB learner profile. These experiences contribute meaningfully to both their personal and academic growth.
