A Teacher’s Journey: Busy last days of the Academic Year

As the academic year draws to a close, teachers find themselves navigating a whirlwind of activities, emotions, and responsibilities. These last days are both exhilarating and exhausting, marking the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. Here, I’d like to share a glimpse into what these final days look like from the perspective of a teacher.

Wrapping up curriculum, grading and assessments, final projects and concerts, recognition awards…. Each piece of student work needs careful evaluation. For me grading is not just about assigning numbers; it’s about providing insights and guidance to help students improve.

End-of-year administrative duties also demand attention. This includes finalizing grades, updating records, and preparing reports. I teach Music in Primary and Middle school and I have whole classes, so more than 130 students to grade and write reports for. Flowers and chocolate keep me above water in these days.

Meanwhile there are also trips and sport or field days happening every day and everybody tries to be a part of “what’s ging on again?’

Amidst the busyness, there are also moments of celebration. Award ceremonies, class parties, and graduation events provide opportunities to recognize student achievements and milestones. These events are bittersweet, as they also mean saying goodbye to students who are moving on to the next stage of their lives.

Moreover preparing for next year, the cycle of teaching is continuous, and the end of one year seamlessly transitions into the planning for the next.

With all the demands, self-care becomes crucial. It’s easy to neglect personal well-being during this hectic period, but I try to maintain a healthy balance that is essential for sustaining the energy needed to finish strong. Simple acts like taking evening walks, eating healthy and getting enough sleep make a significant difference.

End of the year staff party became a popular and well deserved event amongst the teachers.

The last days of the academic year are indeed a busy time for teachers. It’s a period filled with diverse tasks, from administrative duties to emotional farewells. Despite the challenges, it’s also a rewarding time, offering a sense of accomplishment and the joy of seeing students ready to move forward. As we bid farewell to one year and prepare for the next, we carry with us the experiences and lessons learned, ready to face the new adventures that await in the coming year.

Cheers! Summer holidays can start!
