What is an interdisciplinary unit and how can MYP students participating and benefiting from such projects?

This academic year Y8 students have the unique opportunity to become engaged in a prosperous collaborative work that involved the subjects of Drama and Art. We have learned about rituals as the beginning of drama and theatre for humankind and created engaging performances. Students have been responsible for writing their own stories, choosing appropriate music, choreograph a scene, making props, costumes and set elements.

An interdisciplinary unit is an educational approach that integrates multiple subjects, encouraging students to make connections across different areas of knowledge. In the MYP, such units foster holistic learning and help students see the relevance of their studies in real-world contexts. A collaboration between art and drama is an exemplary interdisciplinary project, offering MYP students a dynamic and enriching learning experience.

In this collaborative unit, students might explore the theme of identity by creating a theatrical performance that incorporates visual art elements. Art students can design and construct sets, costumes, and props, while drama students write scripts, direct scenes, and perform. This integration allows students to apply their artistic skills in a dramatic context, enhancing their creativity and technical proficiency.

Working together, students develop teamwork and communication skills, as they must collaborate closely to bring their shared vision to life. They learn to respect and value diverse perspectives, recognizing how different forms of artistic expression can complement and enhance one another. Through this process, students also gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of the arts.

By participating in an art and drama interdisciplinary unit, MYP students experience the full creative process, from conception to execution. They engage in critical thinking and problem-solving as they navigate challenges and make decisions collaboratively. The project culminates in a performance or exhibition, providing a tangible outcome that showcases their collective efforts and talents.

This type of interdisciplinary project not only enhances students’ artistic abilities but also builds their confidence and presentation skills. It aligns with the MYP’s emphasis on developing well-rounded individuals who can think critically and work effectively in diverse settings. Ultimately, an art and drama collaboration enriches students’ educational journey, making learning more engaging, meaningful, and applicable to their future endeavors.
