Challenging journey of Year 10-11 students in chemistry studies

This year, our Year 10 and 11 chemistry students have faced a challenging but exciting journey. We started by revisiting the basics—atomic structure, bonds, isotopes, ions, and the properties of compounds. Spending time strengthening these fundamentals has given students a solid foundation to tackle more complex topics and explore real-life applications of chemistry in next term.

One of the highlights of the year was the students’ research on isotopes. They created detailed mind maps showcasing different applications, which were proudly presented during Open House Day.

Their creativity didn’t stop there: for their summative assessment, students designed chemistry-themed crosswords—another feature of Open House. Dare to solve one?

In addition to research and presentations, students learned valuable skills in peer evaluation. They got a taste of what it’s like to be a teacher: grading work, giving constructive feedback, and even deciphering some “interesting” handwriting!

Hands-on activities have always been a part of the curriculum. One of the practical experiences was experimental work on the properties of chemical compounds, where students investigated solubility, melting points, and electrical conductivity. The results were compiled in lab reports, which served as a summative assessment.

Another favorite was the ionic compounds game—a puzzle where students had to combine the right number of oppositely charged ions and write proper chemical formulas.

The class practiced it competitively before Open House Day, and their enthusiasm and teamwork were inspiring to see. Some even volunteered to present their findings during the event, showing confidence and pride in their work.

As the first semester comes to a close, students have also started exploring the basics of thermochemistry. Looking ahead, the second semester promises more real-life applications of chemistry and exciting student-led projects, giving them even more opportunities to research, investigate, and apply their knowledge.
