From Classroom to Court: A Teacher’s Perspective on How to Support Our Athletes Outside of School

As teachers, we spend our days focused on nurturing the minds of our students within the walls of our classrooms. However, witnessing their achievements outside of school, particularly in sports, offers a unique and rewarding perspective. This year again I went to watch and support our Year 7 student Teo Tarda when he played in the Slovak National under 14 basketball championships.  The top 8 teams from around Slovakia, including Inter, competed getting to a final between Inter Bratislava against Galaxy Kosice. Teo was the best defender on his team.

Beside enjoying the particular match, the atmosphere, the tension and my coffee I have also found out that:

> Watching students excel in sports reveals different facets of their personalities and abilities. It’s a reminder that our students are multifaceted individuals with diverse talents and interests.

> Attending their games or competitions fosters stronger teacher-student relationships. It shows students that their efforts are recognized and valued, enhancing mutual respect and rapport.

> Simple words of encouragement can go a long way. Congratulate students on their achievements and show genuine interest in their sports activities.

At this point I notice and recognize the time and effort students invest in sports. That’s why I try to offer flexibility with assignments and deadlines when possible, understanding the balance they are striving to maintain between academics and athletics.

I have also learned how to help these students to balance their Academics and Athletics. Strong time-management skills are needed. I am trying to give support in balancing their academic workload with sports commitments or when they feel overwhelmed.

Supporting students in their sports achievements is part of a holistic approach to education. It’s about nurturing well-rounded individuals who excel not just academically, but also personally and socially.

Witnessing students’ achievements outside of school can enrich our teaching practice and deepen our understanding of each student’s unique strengths and challenges. It provides a fulfilling and enriching perspective. It allows us to celebrate their successes, support their endeavors, and contribute to their overall development. By embracing their athletic achievements, we reinforce the values of hard work, dedication, and resilience, helping students to grow into well-rounded individuals ready to tackle the challenges of the future.
