“The story of Everyman,” a medieval morality play, holds enduring significance for MYP drama students, providing rich material for learning and personal growth. This allegorical tale, which follows Everyman as he is summoned by Death and must account for his life’s deeds, offers timeless lessons about human nature, morality, and the fleeting nature of worldly possessions. Exploring this play can deepen students’ understanding of thematic storytelling and character development.
Everyman’s journey prompts reflection on universal themes such as mortality, repentance, and the quest for salvation, making it relevant even in contemporary contexts. For MYP drama students, studying Everyman helps them grasp the historical evolution of theatre and the role of morality plays in educating audiences through entertainment. Analyzing the characters, each representing different facets of human life (such as Fellowship, Goods, and Knowledge), enhances students’ ability to interpret and portray complex symbolic roles.
