Developing Independent Learners at EISB
One of the key development goals of and EISB student is becomging an Independent Learner.
An independent learner is someone who takes responsibility for their own learning process, seeking out and acquiring knowledge, skills, and understanding without relying heavily on direct supervision or instruction from others. They are proactive, self-motivated, and resourceful in pursuing their educational goals.
Independence in learning is helpful for several reasons:
- Flexibility: Independent learners have the freedom to explore topics of interest at their own pace and in their own way. They can tailor their learning experience to suit their individual needs and preferences.
- Ownership: Taking control of one’s learning process fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment. Independent learners are more likely to be personally invested in their education, leading to deeper understanding and retention of information.
- Critical thinking: Independent learning encourages individuals to question, analyze, and evaluate information independently. This promotes the development of critical thinking skills, which are essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world.
- Life-long learning: Independent learners develop the skills and mindset necessary to continue learning throughout their lives. In a rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt and acquire new knowledge independently is invaluable.
- Self-discipline: Independent learning requires self-discipline and time management skills. By cultivating these qualities, individuals not only enhance their academic success but also develop important life skills that are applicable in various contexts.
- Preparation for the future: In many professional settings, the ability to learn independently is highly valued. Employers seek candidates who can adapt to new challenges and acquire new skills autonomously, making independent learners well-prepared for success in their careers.
Overall, independent learning empowers individuals to take control of their education, fostering personal growth, intellectual curiosity, and adaptability.
An EISB edcuation is focused on a student’s ability to be an Independent learner.ย This is the goal of EISB Primary.
In Middle School, teachers build on this by focusing on maturation of students, “where EQ meets IQ.”ย By the time students begi
n High School, they are ready to take their learning to unlimitless potential.
One student, who is finishing Middle School, recently complained that school had become “too easy” for him.ย He didn’t really need teachers and could complete the course without the teacher’s help.ย ย It was explained to him, that is what is supposed to happen.ย ย If a student does what is asked, as they enter High School, they are ready to take full ownership of their learning.ย For him, that meant, deciding what they want to study, where they want to go professionally and work with teachers to create a learning programs that prepares him in that direction.
Students – do you want the freedom that comes from independecy?ย Do you want to take ownership of your learning and “do what you want to do” in preparation for life after school?ย Are you ready to do what it takes to become an independent learner?
Parents- Do you want your children that can to more than take tests, to mature into learners with skills that make a difference at the next level?
