🍓🥪 A Recipe for Great Writing!

What happens when you mix curious minds, delicious ingredients and a little creativity?

You get… great learning! 🍌🥜🍫

In our English lessons, we have been exploring different genres of writing. This time, our group was introduced to a new genre — procedural writing.

But rather than simply reading about procedures or completing a worksheet, we decided to experience one first!

👩‍🍳 Step 1: Let’s Make It!

Our tables became little food stations, and the students got ready to make their own fruit sandwiches. 🍌🥪

They had a choice of banana, Nutella, peanut butter and jam. Each student could make their sandwich in their own way.

But there was one important question:

“What do we need to do first?”

The students quickly discovered that making something successfully means following steps in the right order.

🍌 Step 2: First… Next… Then… Finally…

As we made our sandwiches, we talked through the process:

First, choose your spread.
Next, spread it carefully on the bread.
Then, add the banana.
After that, put the other slice of bread on top.
Finally, enjoy your fruit sandwich! 😋

Suddenly, words such as first, next, then, after that and finally had a real purpose.

✏️ Step 3: From Doing to Writing

After enjoying their sandwiches, the students looked back at what they had done.

We asked:

“If someone was not here, could they make the same sandwich just by reading our instructions?”

This helped us notice the important features of procedural writing:

✨ A clear title
✨ Things we need
✨ Steps in the correct order
✨ Sequencing words
✨ Action words
✨ Clear and specific instructions

Because the students had actually done the activity, they had a real experience to turn into writing.

💭 From Experience to Writing

This hands-on experience helped our students see that writing is not just about putting words on a page. Sometimes, the best way to understand a new genre is to experience it first.

First, we did.
Then, we noticed.
Next, we thought.
Finally, we wrote. ✏️

And, of course, there was a delicious reward at the end! 🍌🥪😋
