From Miracle Cure to Modern Science: Our Year 8 Open House

Our Year 8 students took us on a journey through the glowing, and sometimes dark history of radioactivity. During our school Open House, they presented on how this invisible force changed the world forever.

The students didn’t just stick to the science, they brought history to life by highlighting the cautionary tales of the early 20th century. They shared the tragic story of Eben Byers, whose “radium water” habit served as a grim wake-up call to the medical world.

They also shared the heroic Radium Girls, the factory workers whose fight for justice during the World War era laid the groundwork for modern labor rights and occupational safety.

Beyond the tragedies, the presentation explored how radioactivity evolved from a misunderstood “miracle” into a cornerstone of modern medicine and energy.
