Celebrating Science
On November 5, our Middle School Science classrooms came alive with curiosity and excitement as students from Years 7, 8 and 9 showcased their scientific learning during the English International School of Bratislava’s Open Day.
The event was a great chance for our students to share what they have been learning and exploring in Science lessons over the past two months. Our exploration of living things took visitors into the world of plants, their classification and the diversity of the animal kingdom. Students presented different animal adaptations, explaining how animals develop unique structural and behavioural characteristics that help them survive in their environments. Through carefully designed experiments and demonstrations, visitors had the opportunity to explore and understand these adaptations for themselves.

We also explored the fascinating world of the human body and its organ systems. One of the highlights was a practical investigation into the anatomy of the heart, where students demonstrated a chicken heart dissection, helping visitors identify its different structures and understand how its anatomy supports its vital function of pumping blood around the body.
Another popular activity was our interactive workshop exploring the structure and function of the small intestine. Visitors were invited to take part in a hands-on investigation to discover how the specialised structure of the small intestine, particularly its folds and villi, provides a large surface area for the efficient absorption of nutrients.
Our students also introduced visitors to different types of muscle tissue. By observing prepared samples under the microscope, visitors could compare skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle tissue, identify their distinctive appearances and discover how their different structures are closely related to the specific functions they perform in the human body.
Throughout the exhibition, our students had the chance to become the teachers themselves! They confidently explained scientific concepts, demonstrated experiments, answered questions and encouraged visitors to get involved in the activities. It was wonderful to see them taking ownership of their learning and applying their knowledge in practical situations.

It was, once again, a truly wonderful experience! We are incredibly proud of our Middle School students, their creativity and hard work. A big thank you to everyone who visited, participated and helped make the day such a success.
