Year 5 Heroes Project: Exploring Identity, Community and Influence
As part of our Year 5 Unit 1, “Who We Are: Place, Identity and Belonging,” students took part in a creative Heroes Project. The project gave them an opportunity to explore inspiring individuals while thinking about how people, places and communities can influence who we are and how we contribute to the world around us.
The project began with students working in groups to explore their chosen hero. Each group completed a Heroes planning sheet, which helped them organise their research and ideas. They explored different aspects of their hero, including their background, important experiences, achievements, qualities and the reasons why they considered this person to be a hero.

As part of our Unit, students also considered the places and communities connected to their heroes. They explored how a person’s experiences, surroundings and relationships can influence their identity, values and choices. This helped students make connections between their hero and our central idea that the places and communities we connect with can influence our identity, experiences and sense of belonging.
Once the students had gathered and organised their information, they moved on to the creative part of the project. Using their completed planning sheets, each group created a large visual representation of their hero. They included important characteristics, symbols, achievements and other details that they had identified during their research. The posters allowed them to transform their written ideas into a visual representation of the person they were studying.

Working on the large posters also encouraged students to collaborate and make decisions together. They discussed which information was most important, how to represent their ideas clearly and how to make their final work both informative and visually engaging.
The final stage of the project was the group presentation. Each group prepared a presentation about their hero and shared their work with the rest of the class. Students explained who their hero was, what made them special, what experiences influenced them and how they contributed to their community or inspired others.
The presentations also encouraged students to consider their own lives and communities. Students reflected on the qualities they admire in others and thought about how they themselves can make a positive contribution to their own communities.

Through this project, students developed a deeper understanding that heroes are not only famous people or those who achieve something extraordinary. Heroes can also be people who demonstrate courage, determination, kindness, leadership and a willingness to help others. Their stories can show us how our experiences and connections can shape our identity and influence the way we interact with the world around us.
The Heroes Project allowed Year 5 to combine research, creativity, collaboration, communication and reflection while making meaningful connections to our current Unit. It was wonderful to see students working together, sharing ideas and confidently presenting their learning to others.
