MYP 5 Hot Wheels Laboratory in Physics Class

One of the most anticipated experiences in our MYP 5 Physics class is the hands-on laboratory sessions, where theoretical concepts come alive through practical experimentation. Recently, students embarked on an engaging “Hot Wheels Laboratory” that brought the dynamics of physics into action with miniature cars and inclined planes. The main goal of this lab was to understand uniform accelerated motion, especially how to measure and analyze velocity within this context, giving students valuable insights into scientific data collection and interpretation.

During the experiment, each student performed five trials, releasing cars down an inclined plane and recording the time it took for them to reach the bottom. By gathering this data, they calculated the cars’ average velocities, solidifying their understanding of acceleration and kinematics. This practical work also introduced them to key skills in data analysis, from interpreting variables to recognizing patterns in data sets. Through guided analysis and detailed observation, students compiled their findings into advanced lab reports, enhancing their ability to structure information and present clear, precise scientific findings.

The excitement and focus in the room were palpable as students applied their calculations to verify the accuracy of their data, merging enjoyment with learning in a way that reinforced essential concepts.
