School-wide Activities on Self-Regulation
Social and emotional skills are a big part of our children’s wellbeing and development, alongside all the other skills they are developing. In our school, we have a Social Emotional Curriculum that is weaved into all other aspects of learning. Every month has a theme that we focus on with our students, and this month’s theme is Self-Regulation. We have school-wide activities in which students of all ages can participate!
This month, we have a Self-Regulation Challenge for older students, which gives the students an opportunity to learn some new practical ways to pause, think, and regulate their thoughts and emotions. They can take a card and learn a new skill. Today, we had a breathing challenge, as breath is a wonderful and scientifically proven tool to calm down and regulate. Throughout the month, students will be able to learn about many more, such as butterfly tapping, journaling, focusing on our senses, as well as learning to pause, focus attention, and think through our choices beyond our first impulses.

For younger students, they can play a game to follow the calm path, learning how to pause, take a breath, use movement, and notice what they might need in the moment.

These activities build on our theme in September, which was focused on Self-Awareness. Students had a opportunity to learn how to check-in with themselves and how they are feeling.

We look forward to learning about many more aspects of social and emotional development throughout the year!
