Gabčíkovo Trip 2025

The Power of Water

On Tuesday 21st October 2025, Year 10 students accompanied by two teachers, headed to Gabčíkovo to visit the hydroelectric power plant and the Dunajské Luhy nature area.

The topics of the visit included Geography (the Danube river), Slovak & Hungarian recent History, Sciences, IT & Engineering, renewable energies and environmental protection. The Gabčíkovo works have been supplying clean electricity to approximately 8% of the Slovakian electricity grid since 1992, and help regulate the waters of the Danube for navigation and flood control. Before being taken inside the dam to view the main hall of the hydro electric plant with the 8 huge Kaplan turbines, students watched an informative video in the modern visitor center. And this year, for the first time, they were also given an opportunity to visit the impressive control room of the locks, at the very top of the tower above the dam.

Later on, students enjoyed a break and a short walk near Café Kompa, overlooking the old Danube and the Hungarian riverside.
