From reading to creating
For the first unit of English Language and Literature with Year 10 I decided to kick off the year with a quite intense and emotional read – The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
The story starts in San Francisco with already grown up Amir – main character – who has fled Afghanistan in 1970s with his dad when USSR invaded their homeland. Despite escaping the war, one thing he hadn’t been able to escape for years was something he did as a kid, or more like something he did not do. When he receives a call from his dad’s friend from Afghanistan he realizes that he needs to go back, for he has been given a chance “to be good again”.
The novel is around 400 pages, so I expected students to fend it off. I was surprised when most of the students have actually been reading the book (some were reading only summaries :D). So to test them out I have assigned them a task to digitally recreate any given scene from the book, with a precise physical descriptions of the characters, their emotions, feelings and dialogues. For that they have used a website StoryBoardThat – which comes with variety of digital images you could use to recreate anything, even the smallest uneven mimics on the faces of characters –
Below you can see some of the beautiful works of our students. Hope you enjoy viewing them as much as they have enjoyed creating them.
