Independence day of Estonia – 24th of February

Today I celebrate the Independence Day of my home country – Estonia. It is a proud and meaningful day in the Estonian nation’s history: On February 24, 1918, Estonia declared its independence from Russia. This was followed by the War of Independence (1918–1920), which secured the republic’s freedom. Although Estonia was later occupied during World War II, the country restored its independence in 1991 after the peaceful “Singing Revolution,” showing the strength and unity of its people. Until now Estonian’s hold dance and song fesivals every 5 years…

On Independence Day, Estonians raise the national flag, watch the presidential parade with wide range of military units and machines presented on the parade in Tallinn. Something that everyone should see.

Traditional foods such as black bread, pork, sauerkraut, and the beloved dessert kama are often enjoyed. It is a day filled with pride, reflection, and celebration of freedom. My personal favourite is the sandwich with sardines and egg on black bread:

Today, Estonia is known as one of the most digitally advanced societies in the world, often called an “e-state.” It offers e-residency, online voting, and innovative technology solutions, while still preserving its deep cultural traditions and beautiful natural landscapes.
