Learning Comes to Life at Year 5 Open House

Spread the love

Our school’s Open House was a wonderful opportunity for students to welcome their parents into the classroom and share what they have been learning. It was a special event where our Year 5 students had the chance to become the teachers, researchers and activity leaders, proudly presenting their work and showing how much they had learned during our recent unit.

For this occasion, we prepared several interactive stations around our classroom. Each station offered a different activity, and parents had to complete the tasks with the help of our students. Once they successfully completed a station, they received a stamp from a student as proof of their achievement.

One of our stations focused on research and data handling. As part of our learning, students had conducted their own classroom research using a variety of questions, particularly related to geography and the countries and places people come from. They then used the collected information to create different types of graphs, including bar charts and pie charts.

During Open House, students became researchers once again. They asked parents questions, collected their answers and encouraged them to take part in the research. After the event, we used the newly collected data to create another set of graphs, comparing and exploring the results from our classroom research with the answers gathered from our Open House visitors.

Another popular station featured a large world map. Our students took the lead, guiding parents around the map and checking their answers. It was fantastic to see them confidently sharing their geographical knowledge and taking responsibility for the activity.

Our final interactive station was dedicated to Kahoot. The quizzes were created by the students themselves, and parents had the opportunity to test their knowledge by answering the questions. There was plenty of excitement, concentration and friendly competition as everyone tried to get the answers right.

We also proudly presented a special whole-class art project connected to the theme of belonging. The final artwork looked like a large puzzle, divided into 12 individual pieces, with each student responsible for creating one part. Each student expressed a place or situation where they felt they belonged the most. Their answers and artistic interpretations were all different, making every piece unique. When put together, the 12 individual pieces formed one beautiful artwork, showing that although we are all different and feel connected to different places and people, we are still one class and one community. It was a wonderful way to celebrate both our individuality and our sense of belonging.

What made the Open House particularly special was seeing our students take ownership of their learning. They confidently explained their work, guided the activities, asked questions and supported their parents throughout each station.

It was much more than simply showing what we had learned. It was an opportunity to communicate, collaborate, think critically and apply our knowledge in real-life situations.
