How We Learned Movement Types in Practice

Spread the love

Last year, six students took the “Sports Science” course – SEHS. One section of this course is biomechanics, the science that studies everything related to movement. The first few classes were devoted to practicing and memorizing various movement types. For example: adduction-abduction, flexion-extension, pronation-supination, protraction-retraction, elevation-depression, rotation, dorsiflexion-plantarflexion, inversion-eversion, and others.

First, the students learned this from videos. Imagine a video playing, and the entire group, including the teacher, repeats all the movements, naming them. Someone stumbles, loses their balance, everyone laughs, and then starts over. Then the students practiced this on a skeleton and on each other in pairs. Then, everyone presented everything they had memorized. Within two classes, everyone could clearly demonstrate and name all the movement types. While some students found the course challenging in September, by the end of the year there were many more positive reflections.
